Maiora used Cannes not only to extend its composite M-Line, but also to move into steel-and-aluminium superyachts below 500 GT. The two projects, Supernova 50 and M53, show a different ambition from the earlier Maiora M|30: more customisation, longer-range cruising and a more complex build process.
Supernova 50 is a 49.80-metre project kept below 499 GT. It is being developed with Tommaso Spadolini, while the interiors are signed by Elie Saab under the creative direction of Elie Saab and Carlo Colombo. The important detail is that this is not just a Cannes rendering. The hull is already in build at Siman in Pisa, with delivery scheduled for the second half of 2028.
A Second Project, The Same Limit
M53 measures 52.98 metres overall, with a 9.15-metre beam and 2.40 metres of draft at full load. It also uses steel and aluminium, while displacement volume is held at 499 GT. Twin MAN D2862-LE489 engines rated at 1,066 kW each are stated to give a 16.5-knot top speed and more than 4,500 nautical miles of range at 10 knots.
The layout is planned for 12 guests in six cabins and nine crew in five cabins. The owner’s area on the main deck is described as exceeding 100 square metres when interior and exterior spaces are counted together, while Luca Dini’s design adds an Observatory Deck with movable covers. This reads as a yacht for an owner who wants a more residential 50-metre architecture, not simply another status object.
What It Says About The Market
The 500 GT threshold remains one of the most sensitive parts of the superyacht market. It allows a builder to offer meaningful onboard scale, but still forces design, technical and crewing discipline. Maiora’s move into steel and aluminium gives buyers more layout freedom, but it also raises questions about schedule, weight, systems integration and responsibility for the final performance figures.
For a buyer, W Yachts should start the conversation with risk rather than length: whether the yard has the structure to manage work between Pisa and Viareggio, how the warranty is framed, what the 499 GT envelope really includes and whether the styling promise leaves enough room for engineering and crew operation. In this class, the most expensive mistakes are rarely visible in the renderings.
