Axopar is adding Simrad NSO 4 to selected models at the upper end of its range. The builder says the system will be offered as an option on the Axopar 45 and BRABUS Shadow 38 ranges, while the BRABUS Shadow 45 range will receive it as standard from model year 2027. During the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival, visitors could see the setup on the BRABUS Shadow 1000 XC Cross Cabin at Stand 160.
On the surface, this looks like another screen announcement. In reality, it is a decision about how the boat is driven. Axopar is keeping a choice between NSS 4, with a physical control wheel, and NSO 4, which is a pure touchscreen panel without controls on the glass.
The Helm Belongs In Due Diligence
Simrad positions NSO 4 as a chartplotter built on NEON OS, with larger displays, a glass-to-edge construction and a focus on fast response. Axopar adds its own user interface around that platform, so NSO 4 does not replace the brand’s full helm experience. It becomes the central display inside it.
For a buyer, the practical question is how that layout behaves under way: wet hands, sun glare, wake, night running and a driver who needs to change functions without staring at the screen. A clean glass panel looks excellent at a boat show, but some owners still prefer a physical controller they can locate without looking away from the water. The issue is familiar from cars: a minimalist dashboard does not automatically mean faster operation.
What To Check Before Specifying It
On the Axopar 45, NSO 4 is initially offered as a twin 16-inch display package. On the BRABUS Shadow 38 it appears as part of the optional Extended Navigation Package, while BRABUS Shadow 45 adopts it as standard from MY2027. Comparing configurations therefore means looking beyond the option price. Charts, radar, sonar, cameras, engine integration and software updates all belong in the same conversation.
A buyer who has already been comparing sporty Cannes launches, such as the Pirelli 44 Ducati Edition, should treat electronics as part of residual value. With W Yachts, the useful checklist is service coverage for Simrad/Navico in the cruising area, installer warranty, module replacement cost and whether the alternative NSS 4 layout might simply be the more ergonomic choice for that owner.
